  1. THIS MODEL DOES NOT HAVE THE DIGITAL COMPONENT OUTPUT NEEDED FOR SOME HOME THEATER SYSTEMS LIKE THE BOSE LIFESTYLE 25 II

    read on..

Rarely would I ever rate a product 1 star, but I feel the need to hopefully drastically lower this products rating overall on amazon. After standing in Costco debating between this and the same priced Sony model, and checking the reviews on amazon on my iPhone (both the same star rating), I ended up going with the panasonic based on that it had a few more features and an SD card slot. Granted, would probably never use it, but it was there if I ever wanted. Now nowhere on the box does it say what audio connections it has.

As i’m installing our new 58″ plasma and existing Bose Lifestyle 25 II surround sound system and this panasonic blu-ray player, I notice that the way our existing dvd player connected to the Bose was through a single component (Red and White plugs) wire labeled “digital component” or something similar on the dvd player. It was right next to the analog output connection and the stereo red and white component plugs. The panasonic BD60 didn’t seem to have this digital component. Confused I looked in the manual and it said “the best way to connect to a home theater system is through the digital component” showing the plug I needed right next to the analog output and stereo left and right outputs. Then in small letters in brackets: [BD80].

Apparently, the BD60 doesn’t have that output. NOWHERE on the box or anywhere did it say that when I purchased it. The BD-80 is about $100 more. The Sony model has that output. I made the wrong choice.

Went back to Costco to exchange it today and the sony is now $50 more, promotion over.

  2. One of the main features that got me to buy this unit was the mp3 playback from a usb drive. However, there is no shuffle feature. So, it always starts playing the same song from the same album. So now, I’m sick to hear one of my favorite songs. Who would design an mp3 player without a basic feature like shuffle? Moronic! Also, mp3 navigation is less than desired.

That’s major complaint. Other than that disappointment, the unit has lot’s of features (that I haven’t explored completely yet).

    For movie only, 5 start.

For audio CD, sound quality is better than any of my other DVD players, even though they are all output with digital!

    Cons:

You can’t click a number then play that sound. For instance, you click 9 and play, the first sound will be played.

I purchased through a Dell Home sale. I hooked it up to a Panasonic HDTV that was manufactured in November 2008 using the HDMI connection. It did not even display a menu. I tried two different high end HDMI cables that worked with other players on the same TV. Neither worked with this player. So, this player, designed in late 08, early 09, did not work with a TV that came off the assembly line of the same company at the same time. Either it’s horrible design, or I got a bad player. Return was easy, I then ordered an LG from Amazon.

I received The Panasonic BD80 free with a Panasonic plasma TV I purchased from Amazon. The player is worth what i paid for it; NOTHING! The video drops out an average of 4 times per movie (regardless of whether is a standard or Blu-Ray disc).

I am extremely unhappy with the player, and I am extremely unhappy with Amazon. I called Amazon, and they basically told me there is nothing they can do to help me because the player was free with the TV. Of course, other merchants were selling the TV for a lower price, but I paid more to get the free Blu-Ray player.

As usual, it’s buyer beware. Just remember that Amazon is not always willing to stand behind the merchandise they sell.
